2020 Ford Edge vs Toyota C-HR
With their sporty style and rich interior comfort, the 2020 Ford Edge and Toyota C-HR are two crossover SUVs that are bound to catch your eye. Which should you choose? Our LaFayette Ford comparison guide is here to help.
Comfy, Quiet Cruising: 2020 Ford Edge
Both the midsize Edge and the subcompact C-HR make great use of interior space. You’ll also appreciate how both models feature nicely cushioned, supportive seats—the kind that keep you comfortable, even if you’ve been driving all day. And both models also offer high-end options, like leather upholstery and heated seating, for maximum comfort.
However, the Edge’s cabin is slightly more inviting. For one thing, it’s much more spacious inside. For another, the Edge does a great job of keeping noise outside the cabin, making your road trip conversations all the more memorable
As a subcompact model, the C-HR has less passenger space, especially in terms of rear-seat legroom. You can also hear quite a bit of engine and wind noise at any given moment.
Infotainment and Safety Aids: 2020 Ford Edge
This was a close competition, but the Edge comes out slightly ahead. We love its Sync 3 infotainment system, which includes a quick-responding 8-inch touch screen and all-encompassing smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All of this is standard equipment, coming at no extra cost, along with dual USB ports and a rearview camera. The Edge also rolls out a long list of standard safety aids—blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking—to help keep you safe.
The Toyota C-HR matches the Edge’s standard lineup almost to the letter, also including a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capabilities, and an 8-inch touch screen infotainment interface. This little crossover also comes standard with a similar array of safety aids to help you spot anything out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, though, some of these driving aids can be a little too quick to jump to conclusions. For example, twisty roads can make the lane-keeping alert system cry wolf.
Sporty Capabilities: 2020 Ford Edge
It’s the Edge that has extra capacity for adventure. Not only can this midsize crossover tow a bigger trailer, but it can also send you speeding into fast-moving traffic more comfortably. Its powerful engine options—the quickest of which supplies 335 horsepower—give you the confidence to navigate even the busiest North Carolina highways. Properly equipped, the Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is equal to a family-sized boat. Also, every Edge trim model is available with all-wheel drive, sporty performance gear that helps you maintain control on off-road trails and wet pavement.
The subcompact C-HR, on the other hand, puts more of an emphasis on fuel economy than sporty capabilities. This Toyota doesn’t offer all-wheel drive, nor does it drive particularly fast, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 144 horses. Properly equipped, the C-HR can tow a trailer weighing up to 1,020 pounds.
Best Mileage: 2020 Toyota C-HR
The subcompact C-HR will save you a little bit at the pump. Because every model features the same powertrain, every C-HR is EPA-rated for 29 mpg combined (27 city/31 highway mpg).
As the bigger, more powerful model, the Ford Edge is a little less thrifty. Depending on powertrain selection, Ford’s midsize crossover earns up to 24 mpg combined (21/29 mpg).
The 2020 Toyota C-HR is a great little commuter, but it’s the 2020 Ford Edge that really delivers a sporty, modern ride—not to mention family-friendly passenger space.
