2020 Ford Expedition Limited-Limited Max vs Platinum-Platinum Max
You know a vehicle model is popular when comparison articles stop comparing it to other vehicles and start comparing its trim levels with each other. Such is the case with the ever-popular Ford Expedition. In this comparison guide, we take a look at the 2020 Ford Expedition’s Limited and Platinum trim levels. We’ll lay bare what the differences are so you can make an informed choice.
Price: 2020 Ford Expedition Limited
Let’s look at the basics first. The Expedition Limited is the more affordable option with the Platinum being a higher-tier pick. The difference between them is about ten grand. What accounts for that difference? Besides having different engine options, which explains most of the difference in price and we’ll discuss later, there’s also the matter of features and options. The Expedition Limited boasts all of the standard features found in the base XLT trim level, plus these extras: wireless device charging, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power-adjustable pedals, leather upholstery, heated second-row seats, front parking sensors, HD Radio, and 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. In addition to this trim’s standard features, there are two packages to be had—the FX4 Off-Road Package and Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package—each with more safety and driver convenience features.
Meanwhile, the top-tier Expedition Platinum offers you everything the Limited does, including the optional features, plus additional ones like multicontour front seats, quilted genuine leather upholstery, enhanced noise control, and upgraded interior and exterior trim elements. These cosmetic features can really enliven the ambiance of your SUV, but they’re not wholly necessary.
Engines: 2020 Ford Expedition Platinum
The other big difference is that of engine options. The 2020 Expedition Limited comes with a turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. While that’s better than good, the Platinum's engine goes even further. That same EcoBoost engine has been tuned to put out 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The fuel economy is the same either way—17 city miles or 24 highway miles per gallon. Those figures drop when you pick up the all-wheel drive or Max models, so keep that in mind.
Max Models: Tie
Whether you pick up the 2020 Ford Expedition Limited or Platinum trim, you have the option to get the extended-wheelbase Expedition Max model for around $3,000 more than the regular body style. The Expedition Max boosts the cargo capacity to unparalleled proportions.. Without the Max, you’re already looking at an impressive cargo hold, at 20.9 cubic feet of space behind the third row, 63.6 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a colossal 104.6 cubes with both rows folded down. That’s already a tremendous amount of storage space, but the Max takes it to ridiculous proportions: 36 cubic feet behind the third row, 79.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and a maximum of 121.5 cubic feet.
Whether you get the Limited or Platinum trim level, you still get a great SUV. If you’re still not sure which is right for you, drop by your local LaFayette Ford dealership and see for yourself.
