2020 Ford Expedition vs Toyota Sequoia
If you need to seat up to eight passengers, sure, you could probably get a minivan. But wouldn’t you rather get something sportier and more hardcore. If you need something large and in charge, rather than just large, consider a large sport utility vehicle, like the Ford Expedition or Toyota Sequoia. Which of these not-so-gentle giants is better for you and your family? Let’s take a look in this comparison guide.
Engines: 2020 Ford Expedition
It’s really close in this category. There’s only one engine option in the 2020 Ford Expedition—3.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged V6—but this one can be re-tuned for different trim levels. The base offering already puts out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but move up to the top Platinum trim, and you get an awesome 400 hp and 480 pound-feet.
The Sequoia also does well, but not quite as well, with its 381-horsepower V8 engine and buttery-smooth six-speed automatic transmission. Most people won’t be able to tell a difference between these two SUV models in terms of their power and performance, so let’s keep looking.
Fuel Economy: 2020 Ford Expedition
This is where the Expedition really starts pulling away. Because even though the Expedition is longer than the Sequoia and produces a similar horsepower and torque, the Expedition is vastly better in fuel economy. So much better, in fact, that you’ll notice a big difference in fuel costs week in and week out. The 2020 Ford Expedition gets 17 city miles and 23 highway miles per gallon, good for its class. But the Toyota Sequoia gets a dismal 13 city and 17 highway miles per gallon. It’s a real mark against the Sequoia.
Towing: 2020 Ford Expedition
The other interesting thing about those similar engines producing different results is that the 2020 Ford Expedition does a lot better in terms of towing capacity. The 2020 Ford Expedition can muster the strength to tow weights of up to 9,300 pounds. But the Toyota Sequoia comes in almost a literal ton behind, able to tow just 7,400 pounds when properly configured. The 2020 Expedition really is proving to be the more formidable SUV.
Passenger Room: 2020 Ford Expedition
Finally, the 2020 Ford Expedition has more overall passenger capacity, which can really be felt in certain parts of the cabin. We mentioned briefly that the Expedition is longer than the Sequoia, by almost half a foot specifically. That translates to a whopping six inches more headroom for front passengers. (Yes, you read that right. Six.) It also has an inch more legroom up front, five inches more headroom and half an inch more legroom along the second row, and almost five inches more legroom in the back. As anyone can see, the Expedition is far roomier, and it even has more cubic feet of cargo space behind the third seats. All engines being equal, the 2020 Ford Expedition is the king of SUVs in this comparison.
