For a thrifty ride that caters to your family, we highly recommend checking out both the 2022 Escape SE Hybrid and Escape SE Plug-In Hybrid. Not only do these compact crossovers help you save big at the pump, but they’re also loaded with modern creature comforts and lifesaving tech gear. And that’s not all. Unlike hybrids of yore, these new Escape models are quick to get going and feel smooth and comfortable on the road. Let’s take a closer look.
Price
One of the big differences between these two Escape models is price. The 2022 Escape SE Hybrid is a little less expensive, starting at $29,170. Although it costs a little more (starting at $33,940), the 2022 Escape SE Plug-In Hybrid delivers an even thriftier performance.
Powertrains
Under each of these hoods, you’ll find slightly different versions of the Escape’s hybrid engine. The 2022 Escape SE Hybrid features a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that’s paired with a battery-powered motor to deliver a total of 200 horsepower. With this engine, you’ll earn up to 41 mpg combined (44 city/37 highway), which is excellent news for anyone who does a ton of driving.
Meanwhile, the Escape SE Plug-In Hybrid comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with an electric motor that you recharge yourself (hence the plug-in part). You can use either a Level 1 or 2 charger to recharge the Plug-In Hybrid at home. With a Level 1 charger, you can refill the battery in about 10 hours. According to Ford, you can use a Level 2 charger to significantly reduce charging time down to about 3.5 hours.
The Escape Plug-In Hybrid is even more efficient, giving you a total of 105 MPGe when you’re using both gas and electricity. When the electric motor runs out of juice, the powertrain switches into gas-only mode, giving you 40 mpg combined. Note that the plug-in hybrid Escape is not available with all-wheel drive.
2022 Ford Escape SE Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid performance features:
- Hybrid 2.5L iVCT Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine (200 total horsepower)
- Plug-in hybrid 2.5L iVCT Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine (221 total hp, 155 lb-ft)
- Front-wheel drive
- eCVT transmission
- Optional all-wheel drive (Hybrid only)
Escape SE Comfort & Convenience Features
For Escape Hybrid models, the SE acts as the entry-level trim model. (Regular, gas-powered Escapes offer a lower trim model, the S, but it’s not available with the hybrid powertrain.)
The SE is very nicely equipped with comfort and tech features. Inside, these hybrid models treat you to spacious accommodations for five, with soft cloth upholstery and generously padded seating. Just like other Escape models, these thrifty hybrids are smartphone-friendly, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for the SYNC 3 infotainment system.
You can also improve the Escape interior with several available options, including a panoramic moonroof and remote start system.
