Which crossover EV is right for you, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E or the Tesla Model Y? Each of these midsize crossovers has its own take on all-electric driving. Our comparison guide is here to help you figure out which EV is a better fit for your driveway.
Friendly Price: 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
It’s the Mustang Mach-E that gives you the best deal on a high-performance, all-electric drive. Ford’s five-passenger crossover delivers substantial speed, a luxurious cabin, and a wealth of tech features starting at $42,895.
The 2022 Tesla Model Y has a steeper MSRP, starting at $58,990. And, although it costs a lot more than the Mustang Mach-E, it doesn’t exactly pile on many more features. Let’s take a closer look at what you get for your money.
Interior Luxury: 2022 Tesla Model Y
The Model Y comes standard with a longer list of luxury features, including a panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable front seats, and heated front and rear seats.
However, the standard Mustang Mach-E has a lot of features in common with the Model Y, including dual-zone automatic climate control and faux leather upholstery. You can add most of the Tesla’s basic features as options, too, including the panoramic glass roof and heated seats.
Power & Performance: 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
With its dynamic handling and battery-powered speed, the Mustang Mach-E really lives up to its namesake, the iconic Mustang sports coupe. The most powerful version of the Mustang Mach-E, the GT Performance Edition, burns serious rubber with 480 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque.
When you hit the accelerator, the Tesla Model Y delivers an enthusiastic burst of all-electric speed. The quickest version of the Model Y is the Performance trim model, which offers 450 horses and 471 pound-feet of torque. It’s almost as powerful — though not quite — as the Mustang Mach-E.
Federal Tax Credit: 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E
As of this writing, buying a 2022 Mustang Mach-E still gets you the entire $7,500 federal tax credit. Depending on your tax bill, that can add up to major savings for you.
The federal tax credit goes down according to how many EVs an automaker has sold, however. You can check to see the Mustang Mach-E’s current federal tax credit at the EPA’s website.
Unfortunately, because Tesla has reached the models-sold threshold, you can no longer get a tax credit when you purchase any Tesla.
Choose Your Crossover EV
When you take everything into consideration, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E really stands apart from the Tesla Model Y. Ford’s stylish five-passenger crossover looks sportier, delivers extra horsepower, and feels as luxurious and high-tech as any Tesla. And it gives you all of that at a much friendlier rate.
