Sporty, spacious, and safe, the 2022 Ford Escape and Subaru Forester are stiff competitors. Shoppers checking out these compact crossovers generally crave both everyday comfort and high-tech modern features, and maybe even a little adventure on the side. Which is right for you? Let our comparison be your guide.
Lowest Price: 2022 Subaru Forester
The 2022 Forester has a slight advantage here, with a starting price of $25,395. Of course, the 2022 Escape isn’t much more expensive; its $26,510 MSRP kicks off the trim lineup. Both crossovers cost more if you move up the trim levels or add optional equipment.
Modern Features: 2022 Ford Escape
Although both crossovers come standard with ample tech features and safety aids, we think the Escape has the edge. You’ll love its SYNC 3 infotainment system, which includes intuitive menus and a fast-acting central touchscreen. Safety aids — such as blind-spot monitoring and forward collision mitigation — give you a little extra help avoiding accidents.
The Forester’s infotainment system also includes a touchscreen interface and complete smartphone integration (via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). However, the touchscreen can be a little slow to respond to your touch, which can sometimes be frustrating. And, although the Forester also comes standard with forward collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring will cost you extra.
Powertrain Options: 2022 Ford Escape
The Escape is the only compact crossover that offers three engine options. It gives you the ability to upgrade speed, improve fuel economy, or simply save money by choosing the base engine. All-wheel drive is also available to help you improve your grip on wintery pavement or muddy trails.
2022 Ford Escape engine options:
- Standard turbocharged 1.5L three-cylinder engine (181 horsepower, 190 lb-ft of torque)
- Optional 2.5L hybrid powertrain (200 total hp)
- Optional turbo 2.0L four-cylinder engine (250 hp, 280 lb-ft)
Every Subaru Forester comes with the same powertrain, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (182 hp, 176 lb-ft) and continuously variable transmission. It’s about as powerful as the base Escape engine, giving you a confident, composed ride. The Forester also comes standard with all-wheel drive, making it a great choice for drivers who live in wet or snowy climates.
Fuel Economy: 2022 Ford Escape
Thanks to the Escape’s optional hybrid powertrain, Ford’s small crossover really helps you out at the pump. Depending on equipment, hybrid Escapes earn up to 41 mpg combined (44 city/37 highway). With the standard powertrain, the Escape is still pretty efficient, with EPA ratings of up to 30 mpg combined.
Unfortunately, the Forester lags behind in the efficiency department. Most trim models earn up to 29 mpg combined (26/33 mpg). The Adventure trim model is EPA-rated to give you 26 mpg combined (25/28 mpg).
Your New Crossover SUV
The 2022 Subaru Forester offers impressive all-weather performance, but it’s ultimately the 2022 Ford Escape that makes the better daily driver. Choose Ford’s small crossover for a roomy cabin, savvy tech lineup, and all-star powertrain options.
