Choosing between the 2022 Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4 can be complicated, especially since these small crossovers have such similar price tags, tech features, and comfort options. But our comparison guide is here to help.
Starting Price: It’s (Almost) a Tie!
The 2022 Ford Escape starts at $26,510. And the 2022 Toyota RAV4 isn’t too much more expensive, starting at $26,525. And, as we’ll see, both small crossovers give you a lot of features for your money.
Powertrain Options: 2022 Ford Escape
Unlike other small crossovers, the Escape offers three engines:
The hybrid powertrain can help you earn up to 41 mpg combined. And every Escape powertrain helps you enjoy a smooth ride and spirited acceleration.
Meanwhile, every Toyota RAV4 comes with the same powertrain, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (203 hp, 184 lb-ft) and an eight-speed transmission. It’s not quite as powerful as Escape’s heftiest option, but it’s pretty impressive in its own right. The RAV4 is also pretty thrifty, serving you with up to 30 mpg combined.
Adventure-Ready Options: 2022 Toyota RAV4
All-wheel drive is optional equipment for the RAV4, which you can add to improve grip on sandy trails or snowy roads. If you want an extra-rugged ride, you can check out the Adventure and TRD Off-Road models. The TRD Off-Road is especially capable, thanks to its all-terrain tires and off-road-tuned suspension.
The Escape doesn’t offer any off-road-ready trim models. You can, of course, add the optional all-wheel drive system to your ride to improve traction. If you’re looking for an especially rugged Ford, though, we recommend checking out the Bronco Sport. It’s a small crossover that’s built on the Escape chassis but adds standard features like all-wheel drive for a more capable trail performance.
Modern Features: 2022 Ford Escape
Here, the Escape regains the lead. We like how well its safety features work. The standard forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring systems do a good job of detecting danger without crying wolf. And we’re also big fans of Ford’s infotainment system, with its responsive touchscreen and all-encompassing smartphone integration (via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).
Like the Escape, the RAV4 also comes standard with some safety aids, including a lane-keeping system. Unlike the Escape, the RAV4 standard lineup doesn’t include blind-spot monitoring, though you can find this system on higher trim models. Toyota’s infotainment system isn’t quite as intuitive as Ford’s, but you can always switch to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for a friendlier interface.
Choose Your Crossover SUV
The 2022 Ford Escape ultimately takes the lead, thanks to its excellent features lineup, thrifty engine options, and friendly starting price. Choose Ford’s small crossover for a wallet-friendly commute and a smooth, comfortable everyday drive.
