Which heavy-duty truck suits your lifestyle, the 2022 Ford Super Duty or Ram 3500? Our comparison guide is here to take a closer look at each of these popular pickups.
Pure Power: 2022 Ford Super Duty
Super Duty shoppers can choose between three powertrain options:
- 6.2-liter gasoline V8 (385 horsepower, 430 pound-feet of torque) + six-speed automatic transmission
- 7.3L gasoline V8 (430 hp, 475 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
- 6.7L turbocharged diesel V8 (475 hp, 1,050 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
To haul max loads, check out the 7.3-liter gas-powered V8 engine. As you might’ve guessed, the torque-heavy diesel engine helps you achieve the Super Duty’s maximum tow ratings.
There are also three Ram 3500 powertrains available:
- 6.4L gasoline V8 (410 hp, 429 lb-ft) + eight-speed automatic
- 6.7L turbo diesel inline six-cylinder engine (370 hp, 850 lb-ft) + six-speed automatic
- High-output version of the turbo diesel engine (410 hp, 1,075 lb-ft)
Although none of these options gives you as much horsepower as the Super Duty trucks, the high-output turbo diesel engine delivers an incredible amount of torque, perfect for towing a huge trailer.
Max Towing: 2022 Ram 3500
There’s one Ram 3500 model — the Big Horn trim model with the high-output turbo diesel engine — that can tow max loads of up to 37,090 pounds. That’s slightly more than any of the Ford Super Duty models can tow.
However, the Ford Super Duty can give you more flexibility, with a variety of trim models and body style configurations able to tow max loads. Properly equipped, the F-350 can tow up to 35,700 pounds. And the hefty F-450 truck can tow max loads of 37,000, coming in just behind the Ram 3500.
Interior Refinement: It’s a Tie
When it comes to comfy seating and upscale options, both the 2022 Ford Super Duty and Ram 3500 deliver what you seek. These heavy-duty trucks are available with a variety of cabin options, giving you extra passenger space as needed. And each truck also offers a variety of trim levels, so you can balance how much you want to pay with the luxury features you desire. Options for both the Super Duty and Ram 3500 include stylish leather seats, heated and ventilated seats, and premium sound systems.
Off-Road Adventure: 2022 Ford Super Duty
Both heavy-duty trucks offer four-wheel drive, improving traction when the going gets soft, such as on muddy trails. However, only the Ford Super Duty trucks offer the Tremor package, which gives your heavy-duty truck next-level capabilities.
The Super Duty’s Tremor package adds all-terrain tires and off-road-tuned suspension, creating an extra-rugged ride. And Tremor trucks also include high-tech handling features, including a Rock Crawl drive mode. Ford’s Trail Control system comes with the package as well. It’s essentially a cruise control system for off-road trails, moving you slowly forward so you can focus on steering out of a difficult spot.
Choose Your New Truck
The 2022 Ram 3500 has slightly higher tow ratings, but it’s the 2022 Ford Super Duty F-350 that ultimately delivers everything you want in a heavy-duty truck. Choose the Super Duty for maximum capabilities and adventure potential.
