The 2022 Ford Super Duty and Toyota Tundra are two of America’s favorite trucks, delivering rugged power and seemingly endless configuration options. Which truck should you choose? Our comparison guide is here to help you answer that very question.
Rugged Power: 2022 Ford Super Duty
This race was a close one, but the Super Duty’s engine options ultimately supply more power. Upgrade to the Super Duty’s 7.3-liter gas-powered V8 to haul bigger payloads. For max towing, check out the turbo-diesel V8.
- 6.2-liter gasoline V8 (385 horsepower, 430 pound-feet of torque) + six-speed automatic transmission
- 7.3L gasoline V8 (430 hp, 475 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
- 6.7L turbocharged diesel V8 (475 hp, 1,050 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
Meanwhile, the Toyota Tundra offers two very powerful engine options. It actually comes standard with more power than the standard Super Duty engine. However, the Tundra doesn’t offer heavy-duty options like the Super Duty. Instead, Tundra shoppers can choose between a turbocharged V6 and a hybrid powertrain that combines the same V6 with a battery-powered motor.
- 3.5L turbo V6 (389 hp, 479 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
- Hybrid powertrain (total output of 437 hp, 583 lb-ft) + 10-speed automatic
Heavy-Duty Towing & Hauling: 2022 Ford Super Duty
As a heavy-duty truck, the Super Duty is much more capable than the light-duty Tundra.
For a light-duty truck, the Tundra is pretty capable. Depending on body style and equipment, Toyota’s truck can tow a trailer weighing up to 12,000 pounds. Max payloads reach 1,940 pounds.
However, all three Super Duty trucks can tow and haul more weight than the Tundra. The F-250, for example, can tow up to 20,000 pounds of conventional trailer. Equipped to tow a gooseneck trailer, that figure jumps to 22,800 pounds. And the F-250 can haul up to 4,260 pounds, making it a great choice for drivers who haul major weight on a regular basis.
Available Configurations: 2022 Ford Super Duty
The Super Duty is available with three cabin options: regular, extended, and crew. The latter two cabins offer spacious back seats to haul your work crew, family members, or friends around. Depending on cabin and trim level, these heavy-duty trucks are available with either a 6.75-foot or 8-foot cargo bed.
With the Toyota Tundra, two cabins are available: an extended double cab and crew cabin. Both are spacious and comfortable, but drivers who want to maximize capabilities should note that there is no regular cabin available to reduce the overall GVWR. Tundra bed size options are similar to that of the Super Duty, a standard 6.5-foot bed and a long, 8.1-foot bed.
Modern Features: 2022 Toyota Tundra
Both of these trucks are brimming with features. However, it’s the Tundra that supplies more standard features. For example, every Tundra comes standard with a smartphone-friendly infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen. And standard safety aids include adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation.
Similar features are available for the Ford Super Duty, but most are not standard equipment. The base model does include a 4.2-inch infotainment display, backup camera, and hill start assist. However, to get power accessories, the SYNC touchscreen infotainment system, and high-tech safety aids, you need to upgrade to at least the mid-grade XLT trim model.
Your New Truck
The light-duty Toyota Tundra is a decent option, especially if you’re shopping for a comfortable ride. However, the 2022 Ford Super Duty is the ultimate star here. Choose one of Ford’s heavy-duty trucks to tow and haul heavier loads, enjoy premium power, and configure the perfect truck for you.
