What is the Ford Edge?
It shouldn't be possible, but this family-size SUV looks every bit as sophisticated and smart as its more expensive rivals. Whether it comes in White Platinum, Shadow Black, Lightning Blue, Ruby Red, or any of the other six available colors, it's an attractive option. Yet it is definitely a family car, first and foremost, with spacious seating for five on two rows and a generous 39 cubic feet of cargo capacity. But why not drive the family in something that looks good?
Is It Worth the Cost?
The 2018 Ford Edge starts at $29,200. That's an average starting price for a midsize SUV, but a great value considering all you get with the Edge. The Edge is quiet, comfortable, and spacious cabin cocoons your family in a world of its own. Turn on the optional intuitive SYNC 3 interface and you have Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity to fill the cabin with music and voices of your making. There's also a standard USB port, Bluetooth, proximity key, push-button start, and rearview camera. Parents of teens will appreciate the Ford MyKey system to keep their adolescent drivers safe and responsible.
Is It Fun to Drive?
The 2018 Ford Edge has three engine options, so the fun factor is up to you. For those who only need a stately drive from place to place, the base twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will do just fine. It's a decent engine, neither weak nor powerful. There's also the 3.5-liter V6 engine on some trims. More horsepower delivers more acceleration. Finally, on the Ford Edge Sport, there's the 315-horsepower twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine. The Sport is a blast to drive and should make you forget you're driving an SUV entirely.
What's New for 2018?
Two new packages rolled out this year. The Sport Appearance Package can be added to the SEL trim, dimming its color palette. The aluminum wheels, skid plates, grille surround, rear spoiler, and exterior mirror caps turn gray while headlamps, window molding, and cloth seating surfaces are black.
The other package is called Safe and Smart. True to its name, this package adds a bevy of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, auto-dimming driver's-side mirror, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
